CHAPTER Twelve

We arrive at the Crown, the air now cool and swirling around us as we walk away from the parking space. The hum of the engine still lingers in my hips, a reminder of the ride, but it’s the adrenaline that pulses through me still having ridden faster than we have the whole night.

Jacks strides beside me effortlessly, his presence commanding my attention as we head toward the entrance. The city’s lights reflect off the hotel’s exterior ground windows, but all I can focus on is the way Jacks seems to fill the space around me, making everything else fade into the background. As we walk through the revolving door, I catch glimpses of us in the mirrored glass, my helmet under my arm, and Jacks beside me, his expression unreadable but his hand steady on the small of my back, guiding me forward. It’s strange how this place feels different now, almost charged with a new kind of energy. Maybe it’s the company. Or maybe it’s because for the first time, I don’t feel so alone.

We step into the elevator, the doors closing with a soft thud, sealing us in a quiet, reflective space. I lean back against the cool metal wall, feeling the tension in my shoulders finally start to ease. Jacks presses the button for our floor, and the elevator begins its smooth ascent.

“Did you enjoy the tonight?” He asks with a tone that makes me think he really does care for my answer, a slight nervousness underling smirk playing on his lips.

“I did,” I admit, glancing up at him. “It was… freeing.”

“Good,” His voice low and soothing only has me wishing he’d kiss me again. “You needed it. It clears your head.”

“I’ve never felt anything like it before.” I spill the secret that would’ve been better kept to myself because Jacks looks at me, truly looks at the me that’s stuck inside this mine, and his gaze softens.

“You don’t get out enough. That’s going to change.”

“And you think you’re the one to change that?” He grins, a flash of mischief in his eyes yet a certainty I have no idea how he has.

“I know I am. You need someone who knows how to live a little. Someone who won’t let you stay cooped up in your head.” I’m honest with my reply, digging for more words that make me feel understood.

“And what makes you think I want that?”

“Because I’ve seen it in your eyes,” His tone more serious now as if he can see what I want from him. Like he’s heard my wish and has no issue granting it. “You’re craving something different, something real. You’re tired of the same old routine.” I’m about to respond when the elevator slows, signalling our stop. But before the doors open, Jacks steps closer, his voice a low murmur.

“Stick with me, and I’ll show you what living really means.” I feel a shiver run down my spine, his words lingering in the air as the elevator dings softly, the doors sliding open to reveal the brightly lit hallway.
